After 14 years, the Lexus GX is finally getting a redesign. The all-new model will be unveiled on June 8, at 8 p.m. EST.
It can't come soon enough. The current model was introduced for the 2010 model year, with the same rugged bones as the global-market Land Cruiser Prado. A smaller sibling to the full-fat Land Cruiser, the Prado is frequently used as a rugged-terrain runabout, a police car, or an ambulance. The Lexus version is considerably nicer for the U.S. market, with a luxurious cabin, but there's only so much you can do to make a truck platform that old feel luxurious. Still, the GX remains a legend here because of its serious factory off-road capability and easy overlanding endurance.
The new one appears to have the same boxy, tall, narrow proportions as the outgoing model. The windshield is upright, and a thick bash plate is visible on the front bumper. Given that Lexus shows it smashing through mud, we expect the focus on off-road prowess to remain. The powertrain will likely change, though. The current model is offered exclusively with a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V-8. By 2025, though, Lexus and Toyota aim to offer a hybrid variant of every model. As a result, we'd expect this to offer some sort of i-Force hybrid powertrain, with the possibility of a downsized, turbocharged engine as the base option.
We won't have to wait long to find out. Lexus will full unveil the truck on June 8, at 8 p.m. EST. Check back with us then for the full rundown.
