ARE WINDSHIELDS BECOMING UNAFFORDABLE?

Essential, but increasingly expensive to replace, windshields have cameras and other technologies integrated into its protective glass, with manufacturers increasingly using different models.

Windshield repairers are increasing their prices and the reason is simply a technological one. Gone is the simple curved plate of laminated glass. For over a decade, the windshields have been incorporated with a defrosting system, and above all accommodate cameras and sensors that need to be recalibrated at each replacement. These cameras and sensors are restrictive in terms of time, material and know-how and obviously come with a cost. Above all, each brand has its own systems and specific tools. This means that repairers need training and some level of investment, while for drivers themselves, insurance becomes almost imperative in order for them to be able to cover any repair(s).

Exponential

In addition, the generalization of these devices, especially with regards to the obligatory installation of a signaling reader and driving assistance systems for all new models since July 2024, is increasing the number of vehicles equipped with the high tech windshield. According to a specialist interviewed by RTBF, in 2026, 95% of cars on the road should have at least one sensor or camera connected to its windshield, compared to 20% in 2018! And to make matters worse, manufacturers are increasing the number of models and finishes, which increases the number of windshield references available, along with the variations of 'Glass' that must be stocked in order to respond to a broken windshield or chip quickly as soon as possible. From now on, the specialist repairs, the specialist replaces, and the specialist also calibrates.
